The Department of Semiconductor Engineering and is planning to recruit students from 2023. Following the request from Samsung Electronics to establish a department that fosters excellent engineers and researchers, the establishment was approved last year on Nov. 1, and a contract was signed with Samsung Electronics on Nov. 22.
The vision of the Department of Semiconductor Engineering is to become a Top 5 university in this field leading research and developing talented educational groups. To do so, the department aims to foster students who are equipped with the following four qualities: those who (1) perfectly understand the fundamentals of semiconductor engineering (such as materials, devices, processes, and designs), (2) knowledge of the latest trends and market situations, (3) have the practical ability to readily construct prototypes, and (4) possess an entrepreneurship mindset with leadership and communication skills.
The undergraduate admission process for 2023 begins this September. Applicants are required to prepare all the necessary documents and follow the schedule as given in the application guide (https://adm-u.postech.ac.kr/entrance-exam/guide/). Unlike other majors, the Department of Semiconductor Engineering is run by a special curriculum, so the admission also takes on a special track: 40 students are admitted via two different types (Type I and Type II), with 20 students each being selected. Specifically, Type II requires the minimum College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) scores: the scores of mathematics (calculus or geometry) and science (average of the two subjects selected) must be at least level 3 for each and level 5 when totaled. Applicants cannot apply for both types but may apply to the regular track at the same time.
The curriculum is run by a 3+3 B.S-Ph.D intensive education program through which B.S (3 years) and M.S-Ph.D (3 years) can be achieved within 6 years. After completing elementary courses as freshmen, the students take courses on semiconductor design, materials, processes, devices, and software, and may take advantage of special programs such as international conferences or internships. During the curriculum, the students are all granted full tuition and may receive special scholarships. In addition, students are guaranteed employment at Samsung Electronics after graduation, although it is an obligation. Specific curriculum details can be found at https://semi.postech.ac.kr/curriculum-eng/.
Through the new department, POSTECH hopes to foster global semiconductor engineering talents. Professor Byoung Hun Lee, head of the department, said in a welcome message that the department aims to nurture “global leaders who will safeguard Korea’s semiconductor industry amidst the competition of future semiconductor technology development.”
