POSTECH uploaded a post on its website on July 26 titled Announcement of the invitation of professors from all areas of medical science. Accroding to the post, MD Ph.D.s, who study medical science including the drug discovery, stem cells, artificial organs, and neuroscience, will be invited.
President Moo Hwan Kim said, “Since it may take time to establish a medical school and graduate school, we will first build the Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering (working title) to prepare for a research base camp.”
Once the recruitment of professors is completed by this year, the school will accept new students from the 2023 Spring Semester. Those eligible to apply for the Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering are graduates of medical schools with doctor’s licenses. POSTECH is looking for professors who can create a “synergy effect with ongoing research”. To this end, a special invitation committee will determine whether the newly invited professors’ research plans can synergize with ongoing research at POSTECH.
Convergence research of medicine and engineering is increasing worldwide. For example, the University of Illinois College of Medicine was established in 2015 to integrate medical science and engineering. This program not only trains doctors and scientists,  but also provides high qualified engineers with opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities in the medical and scientific fields.
For this reason, POSTECH is actively working to establish a medical school beyond the Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering. “The reality is that POSTECH has excellent manpower, research performance, and infrastructure, but this is not enough to lead to clinical trials,” President Kim said, reiterating the need to establish a medical school in the future.
Graduates of the Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering will grow into medical scientists active in various fields. POSTECH is also considering active support in startups for professors and students at the Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering. POSTECH’s goal is to foster talent to create “a second Genexine (a bio company founded by Professor Sung Young-chul)” through convergence research and systematic startup education.
