From a young age, I never had a taste for writing. In high school, I excelled in every subject except for language and literature, the only subject that required good skills in writing essays to get good grades. I always had trouble expressing my thoughts in words using the right diction, sentences, and grammar, even when writing lab reports. To me, writing has always been a challenging and burdensome task.
Yet, I have always known the importance of writing, especially when it comes to newspaper articles. As an avid newspaper reader, I have witnessed how society, even myself, could easily be swayed by the media. Newspaper articles have immense power that can change the world. They create public opinions and space for discussions. These aspects of newspaper articles were very appealing to me, and it became my goal to apply for The Postech Times since the beginning of the academic year. Now, as a reporter of The Postech Times, I will try to bring about positive influences to the POSTECH community by sharing interesting and informative news with the readers.
“With great power comes great responsibility,” says a famous proverb. As forementioned, a reporter holds the power to influence the reader’s point of view and thereby shapes the society we live in. I have seen how inaccurate information or a reporter’s bias resulted in unintended consequences such as secondary victimization or a witch-hunt. Hence, when I write articles, I will try my best to rule out any personal opinions and stay as objective as possible, encompassing every perspective that may arise about an issue. Also, I acknowledge that English is a delicate language where every word entails subtle nuances. Seemingly similar words could have different connotative meanings that completely change the tone of the text. Thus, I will be cautious in choosing adequate words so that the articles perfectly reflect my intent.
It is a new challenge put forward, yet I am excited to face it! I hope to be of great help to the reputable The Postech Times.
