Professor Yu Son-cheol (CiTE) and his team from the  POSTECH Gyeongsangbuk-do Sea Grant Center developed a wireless underwater camera that can be used for the ecological analysis of salmon runs. As a part of marine and fisheries local technology specialization project, The POSTECH Gyeongsangbuk-do Sea Grant Center and the Gyeongsangbuk-do Research Center for Freshwater Fish studied the ecological properties of returning salmon in Wangpicheon, Uljin. This newly invented wireless underwater camera is capable of 360-degree imaging and can transmit visual information in real-time and up to 10km off the coast. It can be used for more than a month without maintenance as it charges using solar energy. Research on the salmon run until now has been conducted by people going out to the scene for the data, but with the wireless underwater camera system, the research team can access more structured data in their lab in real-time. The Gyeongsangbuk-do Sea Grant Center stated that this technology could be applied to many of their procedures of resource management including ecological analysis of fisheries. Prof. Yu hopes his technology can help fishermen in their fishery management, highlighting, “analyzation of fish ecology, as well as Fish farms, can utilize this wireless underwater camera system with ICT technology.”
