Working on the grass root problems should be the first priority

First of all, on behalf of all graduate students I would like to heartily congratulate Professor Moo Hwan Kim for being elected as the 8th President of our university. It is a great honor for me to get an opportunity to write in the column “총장께 바란다” and represent my opinion regarding present scenario of our university and desired role of the new president.

Since its foundation, seven other presidents have served POSTECH with their brilliant leadership and determination to do something better. We became a brand in science and technology in just three decades, and achieved success in many different aspects. But somehow we are not at the right position where we wanted to be.

Our dream to be among world’s top 20 universities by 2020 has collapsed, and the way we are drifting away from various top university rankings, that seems quite inevitable. We wanted to become the Korean version of Caltech, but even failed to lift up the number of international graduate students in last ten years. We produce scholars, who easily get high salary tech-industry jobs but do not think about entrepreneurship. We became bilingual university in 2010, but still today notice, flyers and emails are often prepared in Korean only, which deprives many people from their right of access to equal information. Many students do not get vacation, many of them suffer from psychological stress due to relationship with their advisor and often they face financial difficulties in living. Can we really make “the value creating university” like this? It is time we have to think rationally what our purpose is.

Intellect of POSTECHians is our wealth and we have to well nourish it at any cost. We have to help them to find their real value by igniting them not only through scientific trainings but also social and spiritual ways. Integrating Korean and foreigner students to establish an ideology of oneness is also something we should work on. Hope we understand that there are lots of thing to be done in future years..!!

It is a tough time for our university which definitely needs a strong leadership. A person who knows POSTECH from its birth hopefully may know how to handle this situation better than anyone; and that is why I am very much optimistic about Prof. Moo Hwan Kim. In many ways I have personally realized that there is a communication gap between students and the university. Because of the oriental culture of Korean society students prefer to silently cope up with a bad situation rather than complaining about it. Indirectly it creates pressure on them which may lead to bad consequences. I want our new president to interact more with students and listen to their voice in order to understand the real scenario, rather than just following administrative meetings and conclusions. I believe that will be the first key to the solution of grass root problems.
