The Haedong 78 Tower and Alumni Road of Honor completion ceremony was held on Aug. 9 in POSTECH. Standing as a new landmark, the Haedong 78 Tower and Alumni Road of Honor connect the residential area and the office area which was perceived as separated before by the 78 stairs. The Haedong 78 Tower has two elevators moving from the bottom to the top of the stairs, and an observation platform which views over the Jigok community center and residential area of POSTECH. Alumni Road of Honor, located in the Hill, joints the Haedong 78 Tower and the lower part of the office area. It is the product of the graduates’ collaboration to givev Postechians a better campus environment, in 2016, as the 30th anniversary of the opening of POSTECH.

The Haedong 78 Tower and Alumni Road of Honor represent an innovative and mobile-convenient change to POSTECH. Former president Kim Doh-Yeon stated, “Through the construction of the Haedong 78 tower and Alumni Road, Postechians could move around the campus more safely and conveniently.” He also showed gratitude to the alumnus and the late Kim Chung-sik, chairman of the Haedong Science and Culture Foundation for funding the development of POSTECH. Postechians seem to be flattered by the new facilities as it could ease their burden of ‘climbing’ the stairs whenever they have class. Shin Joong-hyeok (Mueunjae 19) expressed “It is good to see POSTECH invest for students’ convenience and trying to make up the disability-friendly environment.” Considering the usage of the 78 stairs, it is improbable that Postechians could use the tower on a daily basis, but it seems to be helpful for certain people and at certain times.
