For 30 seconds at 12 A.M. on April 6, Tae-joon Park Digital Library rang with shouts of Postechians who were tired of studying for their midterm exams. The event was ‘Screaming Day,’ which was held by Library Council LAON. Choi Min-seok (ME 17), the leader of LAON, replied “I am glad that this Screaming Day went well. LAON members helped me to finish it smoothly.”
The start of the Screaming Day was a post from the POSTECH Bamboo page on Facebook during the first semester of 2015. An anonymous Postechian posted they wanted to get a chance to shout at the library, and that it should become a tradition of POSTECH. LAON had searched some examples, and there were ‘Primal Scream’ events at Harvard, UCLA, Stanford, Cornell, etc. With the results from offline and online surveys on shouting at the library as an event, LAON began holding Screaming Day during the second semester of 2015.
Initially, there was a big controversy over Screaming Day. Some complained about the event itself, the lack of notice, and other things. Others said they enjoyed the event and it felt good to have a tradition unique to POSTECH. After the Screaming event in 2016, the controversy started again and LAON held a public hearing. In the second semester, LAON conducted another offline survey and announced its official position.
From 2017, Screaming Day became an annual event only during midterms during the first semester, and LAON distributed earplugs for people who did not want to be disturbed by the event. Choi said, “Though some people may have felt uncomfortable with the event, I will try harder to finish the next event without any issues or inconvenience.” Now, Screaming Day is a real tradition at POSTECH.
