Professor Kim Nack-joon of Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology (GIFT) was appointed as a ‘Fellow’ of TMS (The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society) – the highest honour of the world’s largest society in the field of metals and materials. He was selected for his innovative research achievements in the development of high-performance structural materials for environment and energy conservation, including the development of new steel materials and magnesium alloy-related technologies. Since the total number of ‘Fellows’ of TMS is limited to 100, those who have made outstanding contributions to the field of metals and materials are selected amongst the TMS members only when a vacancy occurs.
As a director of the Center for Advanced Aerospace Materials, POSTECH, Prof. Kim produced outstanding research achievements in the field of structural material development and contributed significantly to elevating the related-technology to a world-class level. Based on his accomplishments, he was awarded the Prime Minister’s Commendation in 1999, the NAEK Young Engineer Award by The National Academy of Engineering of Korea in 2003, and the Vanadium Award by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, UK, in 2008.
In 2007, Prof. Kim was appointed as a ‘Fellow’ of ASM International, another institute of metals and materials, achieving the honour to be the ‘Fellow’ of the two largest societies in the field.
