2018 POSTECH Matriculation Ceremony

On Feb. 19, POSTECH held the matriculation ceremony for the 2018 academic year freshmen at the school auditorium. This year, a total of 897 students including 335 B.S., 165 M.S., 79 Ph.D., and 318 Ph.D. Integrated Candidates participated to be celebrated for their upcoming journey. This year’s matriculation ceremony was executed similarly as last year, making the freshmen as the protagonists of the ceremony.
The ceremony started off at 11:00 A.M. with the opening declaration of the ceremony, and entrance of the newcomers in the order of students who held 11 department representative flags, B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. candidate students. After the pledge to the Flag, the Dean of Academic Affairs delivered a succinct report on the history and academic affairs of POSTECH. Hong Hye-seung was invited to the stage as the freshmen representative to deliver the resolution of the newcomers, ‘The way to go as new Postechians’.
The mic was then passed on to Ahn Young-il, the alumnus of POSTECH who graduated in 2008 with B.S. degree in Industrial and Management Engineering, to deliver a speech to the freshmen. Ahn Young-il is the CEO of Dream Challenge Group and an official acknowledge Prezi expert. Having much experience in delivering a great presentation, he was once chosen as ‘Top 100 figures who will grace Korea in ten years’ in 2014 by Dong-A Ilbo. Followed was the talk show, hosting President Kim Doh-yeon, professors, seonior students and freshmen as panels. Kim Jung-won (LIFE 14) took the MC to talk about various things such as the most important factor in the university life, concerns about attending to POSTECH, recommended activities or experience during the university life, etc. Each student in panel and randomly picked guests in the ceremony were given a chance to ask the president and talk about their concerns, expectations, and interests. While showing the questions on screen, several events were added to cheer up the talk show. After the talk show, the university anthem and closing declaration of the ceremony were followed.
After the matriculation ceremony, from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M., luncheon was held at the grand ball room of POSCO International Center where the university staffs and faculties, student representatives of student unions and freshmen were invited. The briefing session followed from 1:50 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. where the parents of this year’s freshmen came in to hear about POSTECH’s academic schedules, scholarships, academic policies, etc.
